People urged her to leave her husband, but she knew this was the time he needed her most.
When getting married, couples vow to stay by their partner’s side, in sickness, and in health—no matter how hard life can be on them. Unfortunately, with the availability of divorce and annulment, many people choose to end their relationship rather than making it stronger. But for this Malaysian couple, hardships are just part of loving each other more.
30-year-old Hamdan Hashimand and 29-year-old Nurr Hidayah Hassan have been married for 3 years, and everything was going fine for them. Hamdan then started working at a clothing factory warehouse to make ends meet earlier this year. However, their lives took a hard turn when his eyes started to hurt. The doctor simply prescribed him eye medication and pills to relieve his pain.
But after 24 hours, his mouth and eyes started to swell as well. So Hidayah brought him to Melaka Hospital, where he was diagnosed with chicken pox. To relieve the pain and lessen the swelling, doctors gave him antibiotics—which later turned out to make his condition worse. His skin started blistering and seems to be bleeding terribly.
“He went into the ICU for about a month. It saddened me to see him in that condition but as his wife, I must be strong,” Hadiyah told World of Buzz.
After a series of tests, the doctors diagnosed with him Stevens-Johnson syndrome. The said diseases is a rare, serious disorder of your skin and mucous membranes. It’s usually a reaction to a medication or an infection. Often, it begins with flu-like symptoms, followed by a painful red or purplish rash that spreads and blisters.
Unfortunately, the disease terribly affected Hamdan’s eyesight, and doctors could no longer save his eyes. They soon told Hadiyah that Hamdan will no longer be able to see the world.
“The doctors tell me that my husband can no longer see life before as his eyes are affected. He can only hear. My husband’s right eye couldn’t be saved as a layer of membrane grew over, blocking his vision,” she said.
When Hadiyah shared their story on social media, netizens urged her to leave her husband because it would be hard for her to work and take of her husband at the same time. But for Hadiyah, she believes that this is the time her husband needs her the most—and she will never abandon him.
Hamdan is now recuperating in their home, and his recovery is going well all thanks to his loving wife Hadiyah. “I will be with him through thick and thin and I will do my best to find a way to cure him,” she told World of Buzz.
