Apparently, her children haven’t eaten a single bite for three days.
Most criminal acts are out of greed. But for some people, committing crimes is the only way for them and their families to survive. This was the case for a woman who tried to steal food for her three starving children in Hillsborough, North Carolina.
A mother-of-three was reported to the police by a grocery store after she was caught stealing food. When caught by the police, the woman admitted to the crime and said that the food was for her starving children.
In a post on Facebook, the Hillsborough Police Department stated Senior Corporal Keith Bradshaw and Officer First Class Candace Spragins “located the offender at her residence, where she gave back the $36 (£29) worth of food that she stole for her and her child.
“This was not a crime out of greed but one seen as necessary by a mother trying to feed a child.”
Apparently, the woman and her three children had not been eating for three days. In an interview, the suspect said: “I had to go out and steal food, and that’s desperate, and I’m sorry for doing what I did but my kids were hungry.”
To help the woman, several police officers decided to chip in and buy food for the family. Lt Simmonds explained: “While the suspect was in front of the magistrate, the officers went to the grocery store and spent $140 (£107) of their own money on food for her family. Then they drove her home with the groceries.”
“As police officers we come into contact with people when they are vulnerable,” said Lieutenant Simmonds. “We often buy people meals or gas. This is what policing is about in 2017. It has to be about partnership.”
The Hillsborough Police Department confirmed the woman was charged with theft, and she is currently awaiting a court date.
