It was her third open-heart surgery, and it was extremely risky.
Did you ever dream of marrying your very best friend and first love? Though puppy love easily fades as we grow up, it will always remain in our memories which we will carry as we transit into adulthood. But this 5-year-old girl’s only wish was to marry her best friend—and her parents allowed her to!
5-year-old Sophia Chiappalone had serious heart defects since she was born. As a matter of fact, she already went under the knife two times and was about to undergo her third open-heart surgery. The surgery was highly risky, and doctors told Sophia’s family to be ready for the worst.
Sophia’s mom, Kristy Somerset-Chiappalone, asked her daughter what she wished for before the surgery. Sophia’s answer was simple: she wanted to marry her bestfriend and boyfriend, 6-year-old Hunter Laferriere.
“It became apparent that her heart wasn’t looking as well as they would like and we knew she needed treatment,” the single mom of three told ABC News. “So I asked Sophia, ‘What do you want to do? Do you want to go to an indoor water park? Do you want to go on a shopping spree, maybe get some toys?’ And she said she wanted to be a princess and marry Hunter.”
It was a hard wish to grant, but Hunter and his mother Tracy made a ‘mock wedding’ possible. Tracy was just as excited as Sophia, Kristy, and Hunter. She called her best friend, Marisa Balletti-Lavoie, who runs Sassy Mouth Photography, and they put together a mock photo shoot for the kids.
Hunter’s mom Tracy wrote on Facebook:
“My 6 year-old son’s best friend and ‘girlfriend’ was asked her wish before going into her third risky, open-heart surgery—it was to marry my son.”
Their story soon went viral on social media, gaining thousands of likes, comments, and shares in just a matter of days.
